Tips To Help Avoid Zero-Day Exploits

Many people should know by now that with the boom of the internet and developed downloadable software, many applications can open holes within your computer allowing a hacker to potentially access your computer. Quick Tip: Delete Windows Live OneCare Back-ups

image Windows Live OneCare, for those of you who don’t know, is a pretty good anti-virus program from Microsoft. One of its best features (one I love) is an automated back-up service that will sync your data on an external hard-drive. Unfortunately, the data is saved in a format only accessible by Windows Live OneCare. This isn’t a problem if you are still using OneCare. But if you’re not, you’re looking at a huge file that Windows (both XP and Vista) won’t let you delete. Seriously.

Luckily, there’s a fix. An easy one.

First, access the command line. If you’re not familiar with what that is, you can access it by using the Run field in the Start Menu. Type CMD and hit enter. Voila.

Now enter the following:

cacls "Z:\Windows OneCare Backup\MyPC-Name" /t /g administrators:F

Well, in your case you’ll change the Z to whatever drive letter your external drive is and change the "Windows OneCare Backup" and "MyPC-Name" as needed. Once you’ve typed that in and hit enter, you’ll see this:

Are you sure?

Of course you’re sure! Type Y and hit that enter key. And you are done. Go delete that folder!
