UK Tip: BT To Make 0845 and 0870 Numbers Free To Call

image As of the 16th January, over four million BT customers will benefit from being able to call 0870 and 0845 for free, after the numbers are added to their BT call packages. People using the Free Evening & Weekend and Anytime packages will be the one’s calling these numbers for no extra cost.

Previously, callers were charged much more than local calls, with many companies purposely using 0870 numbers to recoup money for their support lines.

However, 0844/0871 numbers will still be chargeable, meaning we could simply see a shift from the 0845/0870 to numbers that will still charge.

Be wary, make sure you read the small print:

Free calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers

Availability of free 0845 and 0870 calls of up to 60 minutes duration (excluding indirect access numbers and dial-up internet access) dependent on residential BT Calling Plan: weekends only (with the Unlimited Weekend Plan), evening & weekends (with the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan), or any time (with the Unlimited Anytime Plan). Fair use policy applies – max. 1,000 mins or 150 calls a month. If either of these limits on free calls is exceeded, BT will charge for these calls until further notice.

If you do need to call the more expensive numbers, there is always the very helpful SayNoTo0870.com. These great guys and girls collate all the geographical numbers for these premium lines, meaning you can make substantial savings when calling a support line for an extended amount of time.
