This article is for the people who run their own Windows servers and are frustrated by the amount of time they have to wait for the POP3 Connector to connect and download any new emails on their server. If you run an Exchange on Small Business Server, you may have already noticed that the graphical interface only allows you to set the time between connections to a minimum of every fifteen minutes.
If, like me, you are looking for more of an instant mailbox, there is a simple way to reduce the polling time of the POP3 Connector. All it requires is a small registry editing and two minutes of your time.
NB – For those unusure of editing their registry, please do not follow this guide without assistance. WillINeedIt cannot be liable for any damage caused.
To open the registry editor, all you need to do is click Start –> Run and then type regedit.
Once this is open:
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/SmallBusinessServer/Network/POP3 Connector”. - On the “Edit” menu, point to “New”, and then click “DWORD Value”.
- Type “ScheduleAccelerator” (without the quotation marks) as the entry name, and then press ENTER.
- On the “Edit” menu, click “Modify”.
- In the “Value data” box, type the value that you want, and then click “OK”. To determine the polling interval, the value that is configured on the “Scheduling” tab in the GUI is divided by the value that you type for the ScheduleAccelerator entry. For example, if a 15 minute interval is specified in the GUI and you set the value of the ScheduleAccelerator entry to 3, the connector will poll ever five minutes.
- Quit Registry Editor
Once this is set, you will be able to download emails at a more specific interval.
