If you were one of the people who used the WillINeedIt article we posted a while back to grab a copy of the Windows 7 Beta a while back, you may have been wondering if there was an update or if you had the update, how you went about installing it.
Being quite the media-less tech guy, I needed a way to upgrade my Windows 7 Beta to the new Release Candidate without having to burn a DVD. After a bit of research, I came across the perfect way to do so.
Of course, you will need to download the newest release direct from Microsoft themselves. I wouldn’t recommend downloading it via Bittorrent or any file sharing service as it has been reported that many images of the software have been loaded with viruses and trojans.
The Windows 7 RC can be downloaded here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx
Once this is downloaded, use a software similar to http://www.poweriso.comPowerISO to extract the ISO file to a folder on your hard drive. Once this is done, simply do the following:
- Navigate to the sources directory inside the folder you just created.
- Open the cversion.dll file in a text editor, Notepad will do.
- Here you need to modify the MinClient value to something lower than the version you are about to install. For safeties sake, change this number to 7000, the version you are upgrading from.

- Save this file and then navigate to the root of the folder. Run setup.exe and the installation process will do it’s thing.
Thats it! You should now be able to run the top of the line Windows 7 software, free from bugs and periodic shutdowns!
