How To: Edit Lockscreen Text On Your iPod Touch/iPhone

Many people now have jailbroken iPod touch and/or iPhone.  It allows you to install custom apps, and literally change your device to the way you like it. Back when firmware 1.1.1 was out, there was a Cydia app called “Customize” that allowed you to edit the text that you see in the lockscreen.

However, ever since the 2.2.1 and 3.0 firmware were released, this app was broken and hasn’t been updated as yet. Numerous workarounds has been created, however they weren’t very user friendly, and could cost you a reformat of the iPod. Although the following steps will take some work, it should be much easier, and don’t require a computer.

Requirements

A jailbroken iPod Touch or iPhone (works best on iPhones)

Required Repositories

Go to Cydia, open “Manage”, click sources, edit, then add this repository:

Apps to install

Winterboard

iFile

Slide to Unlock Killer

Installing

Now since you have all the required apps, you can now open “iFile”.

Click the back button until you get to the root:

Then, follow the path accordingly:

Go to “Var“, then “stash“, then something that looks like “Themes. Z20*“. Look for “EntriegelKiller.theme“.  Go to “Folders” -> “Springboard.app“, choose you language, then finally click Springboard.strings.

In Springboard.strings, you will see something like:

“ALARM_LOCK_LABEL” = “   “;
“AWAY_LOCK_LABEL” = ” “;
“CALENDAR_LOCK_LABEL” = “   “;
“CF_USER_NOTE_LOCK_LABEL” = “  “;
“POWER_DOWN_LOCK_LABEL” = “   “;
“SLIDE_TO_ANSWER” = “   “;
“SLIDE_TO_CALL_BACK” = “   “;
“SLIDE_TO_CANCEL” = “   “;
“SLIDE_TO_LISTEN” = “   “;
“SMS_LOCK_LABEL” = “   “;
“TIMER_LOCK_LABEL” = “   “;

As you can see, this is obviously built for iPhone. Here’s a description for those of you with iPod touches.

“ALARM_LOCK_LABEL” = “  <—Put your customized phrase here –> “;
“AWAY_LOCK_LABEL” = ” “; <—— Slide to unlock text
“CALENDAR_LOCK_LABEL” = “   “;
“CF_USER_NOTE_LOCK_LABEL” = “  “;
POWER_DOWN_LOCK_LABEL” = “   “; <——-Slide to power off text
“SLIDE_TO_ANSWER” = “   “;
“SLIDE_TO_CALL_BACK” = “   “;
“SLIDE_TO_CANCEL” = “   “; <——– Slide to cancel syncing text
“SLIDE_TO_LISTEN” = “   “;
“SMS_LOCK_LABEL” = “   “;
“TIMER_LOCK_LABEL” = “   “;

After that, you save and go back to the home screen.

Open up Winterboard, and activate the theme. Close it and your device should respring automatically.

When it’s finished, you will see your phrase replacing the usual “Slide to unlock”.

    Could you post instructions on how to edit the text on the "Enter Passcode"?
  • Jonathan: Instead of writing another article I thought it might be an idea to show you this link:

    Scroll down a few replies and you will see a mini How-To.

    Hope this helps.
